WHAT IS A TRICHOGRAM?

The trichogram is a microscopic examination of the roots of your hair.

WHEN IS A TRICHOGRAM PERFORMED?

When you suspect an abnormality in your hair cycle, especially in case of diffuse or sudden hair loss. Trichograms must, in most cases, be prescribed by a doctor.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A TRICHOGRAM?

It is used to accurately measure the volume of hair loss and to assess the proportion of diseased hair in the patient’s hair. The aim is to enable the doctor to establish an accurate diagnosis, both quantitatively and qualitatively, and then to choose the most appropriate treatment.

Le trichogramme est un examen microscopique des racines de cheveux.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

Our examination is based on three criteria:

  • the proportion of hair growth phase (anagen), rest (catagen), death (telogen) or dystrophic (lesions of the hair matrix) on the frontal, temporal and occipital zones of the head
  • the proportion of anagenic hair compared to the proportion telogen hair
  • the diameter of the hair shafts

In order to determine the cause of a hair loss, we suggest either a trichoscopy or trichoscan

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The doctor extracts about twenty hairs from three areas of the scalp. He then studies the hair shafts under a microscope.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

  • The sensation is similar to plucking hair and can therefore cause mild sensitivity.
  • The examination lasts about 20 minutes.
  • It is important not to wash your hair in the 48 hours before the trichogram and to not brush your hair the day before or the day of the exam.
